· Corn was first cultivated by the Native Americans almost 6,000 years ago in North, Central and South America.

· Corn is the # 1 field crop in the United States.  It is the 2nd field crop in Ohio (soybeans is 1st).

· As part of America’s Corn Belt, Ohio is the 6th largest producer of corn in the United States. 

· There are 12 states in America’s Corn Belt, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, and Kentucky.

· Corn is usually planted in the spring months – March, April, May and June.

· In order for the corn to pollinate, at least two rows need to be planted.

· It takes approximately 90 – 120 days for the seed to mature.

· The male part of the corn is the tassel.  The female part of the corn is the silk.

· Each ear of corn is approximately 12” in length and averages 800 kernels in 16 rows.

· Maize is the Spanish word for corn and the term used by the majority of the world.

· Corn is grown on every continent except Antartica.

· The primary use of corn is feed for livestock.

· One acre of corn yields an average of 100 bushels equaling 7,280,000 kernels!
